Abstract
This article explores the significant psychological impact coaches have on the self-concept, self-esteem, and life outcomes of student-athletes. Drawing from both professional and personal experiences, the paper highlights the often-overlooked emotional and developmental consequences of coach-athlete relationships. The article argues that while many coaches enter the profession to inspire, lead, and develop young athletes, a growing trend of performance-focused coaching practices particularly in interscholastic football has eroded these foundational goals. Using anecdotal evidence and psychological theory, the article urges a renewed commitment to mentorship, emotional intelligence, and educational outcomes in coaching.
