Background

Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) used in the health sector approved many advantages. They enhance patient-centered healthcare, improve quality of care, and health education. However, using ICTs remains difficult and entails changes to patients, healthcare workers, and healthcare institutions. The use of ICTs by nurses can impact on their practice. This summarizes the best evidence that undertake the effects of ICTs on nursing practice.

Methods

This review included all studies that aim to evaluate the effect of ICTs on nursing care. Electronic searching was conducted in many databases for the period between 2010 and 2016.

Results

The review revealed many types of interventions (ICTs). These interventions were compared according to the types of outcomes, and types of population. It was found that ICTs have implications for health policy, nursing care, and research. Although some negative impact was illustrated, the effect of ICTs on patient and care worker’s satisfaction was introduced in addition to sparing nursing time and limit resources consumption.

Conclusion

ICTs have been widely accepted by health care workers. Nurses revealed more positive provisions of ICTs more than negatives. Nurses' self-confidence in using these technologies was also evident.
