Abstract

We present the case of a 69-year-old lady referred from the family medicine clinic at the University Hospital Sharjah with a huge abdominal mass. She underwent surgical excision of the mass after appropriate investigations. Histopathology examination revealed a mature cystic ovarian teratoma with malignant transformation, a rare occurrence. Preoperative diagnosis of malignant transformation on clinical and radiological basis is difficult. A multidisciplinary approach is required for optimum management of such cases. The aim of reporting this case is to bring attention to this rare but well-recognized presentation of ovarian teratoma. Further studies are needed for preoperative diagnosis of malignant transformation of a benign tumor and standardizing the management plan.
