Abstract

As for children born in Italy, the assistance of foreign children with cancer is assured by the current network of 54 centres of the Italian Association of Paediatric Haematology and Oncology (AIEOP), and since 1989 all data are recorded in the database of AIEOP Mod.1.01 Registry, in this case used to assess the impact of immigration of foreign children with cancer on AIEOP centres’ activity. The information relating to immigrant children, such as their recruitment for years, pathology, age at diagnosis, area of origin, distribution on the Italian territory, and treatment centre, were compared with those cases born and resident in Italy. The male / female ratio is higher for immigrants than for cases born in Italy (1.5 vs. 1.3), conversely the age is lower (7.7 vs. 8.3 years) (p <0.0001).

Approximately 40% of immigrant cases consists of a solid tumour vs. 48% of cases born in Italy (p <0.001). The 20-years survival of immigrants is significantly lower compared to cases born in Italy (p <0.001), both globally (63.9% vs. 77.3%) and for cases with leukaemia or lymphoma (65.0% vs. 84.3%) or solid tumours (62.0% vs. 69.5%). This analysis has demonstrated the effectiveness of Mod.1.01 database as an instrument to measure the phenomenon of immigration of foreign-born children, suffering from cancer, which refer to the network of AIEOP centres, and identify new needs of the paediatric population with cancer in Italy.
