Abstract
Colorectal cancer has the third highest incidence worldwide and rectal cancer comprises approximately 30% of all cases. Approximately, 339,022 direct deaths from rectal cancer were reported during 2020. Locally advanced rectal cancer has a trimodal approach which consists of chemotherapy, radiation and mesorectal excision. However, almost the half of patients eventually relapse, the 50% of them locoregionally. Total neoadjuvant regimen incorporates induction chemotherapy prior to chemoradiation for achieving high pathological complete response rates. Immunotherapy is an option of treatment that has been evaluated in colorectal cancer with positive results. Recently, several clinical trials have evaluated the benefit of immunotherapy in locally advanced rectal cancer, with interesting results, but controversial. The aim of this review is to evaluate the actual role of immunotherapy in the treatment of LARC.
